Buying a car out of state: questions buyers ask
Is it cheaper to buy a car out of state?
Often, but not always. The vehicle price and incentives can be better elsewhere. Shipping, travel, and paperwork have to be counted against that, which is why the comparison is done on the full out-the-door price. Get each dealer's full worksheet in writing, then compare the totals. The out-the-door price checker adds up the lines.
Do you pay sales tax twice when buying out of state?
You should not. Tax is generally paid based on where the car is registered, and most states credit tax paid elsewhere. The rules differ, so the deal is written for your home state before you sign.
Will a dealership ship a car to another state?
Many will arrange it, and independent carriers can too. We arrange bonded, insured transport and confirm the cost before you commit.
How do I register a car I bought out of state?
With the title or manufacturer's certificate, the bill of sale, and proof of tax paid, at your home state's motor vehicle agency. Some states also need an inspection or VIN check. The dealer paperwork is set up so that step is simple.
How much does it cost to ship a car?
It depends on distance, season, and whether the carrier is open or enclosed. You get the shipping quote before deciding, and it is part of the comparison.
