Out-the-door price checker: add up your dealer's worksheet

Copy the lines from your dealer's worksheet and see what they add up to. This checker does the math only.

A dealer vehicle purchase worksheet with the out-the-door total circled, next to a calculator and a car key fob
On the buyer’s side Negotiating since 2002, online since 2020 New, CPO, and lease, nationwide $100 to start, 1% when you buy. How It Works

Check your dealer's out-the-door price

Pick buying or leasing below. Then type in each line from the dealer's worksheet, and the total updates as you go.

It does not look up taxes or fees, so every number in it comes from your dealer. For general information only; nothing here is a quote or a final figure.

Example numbers are filled in. Replace each one with the figure on your worksheet, and leave a line at 0 if your worksheet does not have it. No quote yet? Adjust the documentation fee and add an estimated tax rate.

The price of the car itself, before tax and fees.
Optional. The sticker price on a new car. Our fee uses this or the selling price, whichever is lower.
The dealer's paperwork fee. $499 is an example.
Paint protection, etching, nitrogen, and similar.
Prep, reconditioning, or delivery charges, if listed.
Government fees, as listed on the worksheet.
The tax amount in dollars, exactly as the quote shows it.
Optional. Only for a rough estimate if your quote has no tax amount.
Manufacturer cash applied to the deal.
What the dealer is paying for your car.
Anything still owed on it.
Used to show the amount financed.
The bottom-line total printed on the worksheet. We will tell you if the lines add up to it.

For information only. This is a simple sum of the numbers you typed in. It is not a quote, an offer, a guarantee, or legal, tax, or financial advice. Only the dealer's and lender's signed documents are definitive.

Out-the-door price

Everything on the worksheet you pay to drive it away

Vehicle, fees, and add-ons$32,999
Sales tax$2,063
Title and registration$350
Rebates−$1,000
Net trade-in (allowance minus payoff)$0
Out-the-door price$34,412
Amount financed after your down payment$34,412

Want us to negotiate it? On this deal our total would be $425: the $100 retainer plus the 1% success fee on the vehicle selling price or MSRP, whichever is lower, before tax and fees. How the fee works

For the fee to pay for itself, the price would need to come down by at least $425. Every deal is different, and no savings are guaranteed.

What does out-the-door price mean?

The one number that matters, and the one dealers least like to quote first.

What is an out-the-door price?

The total you pay to drive the car away: the vehicle price, dealer fees, add-ons, sales tax, and government title and registration fees, minus rebates and your trade-in. It is the only number that cannot be moved around after you agree to it.

Out-the-door price vs MSRP: what is the difference?

MSRP is the manufacturer's suggested price for the vehicle alone. The out-the-door price starts from the negotiated price, which may be above or below MSRP, and adds everything else. Two dealers with the same “price” can be thousands apart out the door. See new car price negotiation.

Why check the dealer's worksheet line by line?

Because the total is where extra charges hide. An add-on nobody asked for, a fee that was not in the quote, or a trade-in figure lower than agreed all change the bottom line. Adding up the lines yourself shows whether the total matches what you were told. More on negotiating trade-in value.

Which dealer fees are legitimate?

Sales tax and government title and registration fees are real and set by your state. A documentation fee is common. Destination charges on new cars are set by the manufacturer. Most other line items, like prep, reconditioning, market adjustments, and add-ons, are dealer profit and negotiable. The finance manager's office review catches the ones that appear at signing.

This checker only adds up the numbers you enter, and the result is only as accurate as those numbers. An estimated tax rate, if you enter one, is simply multiplied by the selling price and dealer fees and is not your actual tax. It does not look up or verify taxes, government fees, rates, or any dealer charge, and it is not a quote, an offer, a guarantee, or legal, tax, or financial advice. Taxes and fees depend on your state, county, city, and vehicle. The dealer's buyer's order and your state's motor vehicle agency are the final word.
